visionOS Previews

2013 – 2024

Product Design

Creative Strategy

Overview
‘Previews’ allows users to experience teasers/trailers for movies, shows, and games based on interest-graph activity. Originally launched as a prototype on Facebook, reimagined for the Apple Vision Pro.
THE Problem
(2024): According to recent estimates, 402.74 million terabytes of data are created each day, and videos account for over half of internet data traffic. –– (2013): Movie studios, tv networks, streaming apps, and gaming companies need more ways than ever to reach consumers in order to preview their upcoming releases. And Entertainment fans want more of what they love, without having to look for it.
MY Process
  • Interviewed marketing teams at major movie studios, tv networks, and gaming companies
  • Developed wireframes and a presentation to gain stakeholder buy-in
  • Recruited and briefed engineers during a 48 hour Hackathon at Facebook HQ
  • Launched a prototype one week later at facebook.com/previews
  • Redesigned the app for Apple Vision Pro
The Outcome
Even though this prototype never gained critical mass on the platform, the idea and execution influenced several future video-based product releases. Facebook filed a patent (“Media Previews Based on Social Context”) which has been cited by Google, IBM, Microsoft, Roku, Snap, and others.
